The FED has a plan, an “exit strategy”, but the question is will it work? I sure hope it does. They keep saying that we are in uncharted waters, and that is what has me worried. It’s like they are practicing economics, like they are experimenting, and if their experiment fails, then we are the ones left holding the bag, whatever that means. Glenn Beck and others are very worried about hyperinflation, and so am I, but after hearing the chairman speak, I feel a little better. I have always felt that putting more money into the system would not result in hyperinflation because it, the extra money, will have just been filling a hole. But then again I’ve been told that you can’t just keep printing money based on nothing; if the economy is not expanding, then how can your money supply expand. Of course I’m no financial genius, I can barely run Quick Books, but then again, does that not put me in the same category as our Secretary of the Treasury, Tim Geithner. I also was late paying my payroll deposits, and have received a penalty from the IRS. I had one quarter of the penalties waived based on their one time abatement policy, but I failed to get the following quarters penalties included. I thought they should be included because I received them in the mail within a week of each other. So now I will receive a bill from them within 14 days. Created in 1930, the Sea Pool at Bude in North Cornwall has provided a haven for safe bathing for over 80 years. It is one of the very few tidal pools which still remains open to the general public today. Following funding cutbacks, the Sea Pool faces an uncertain future. The Friends of Bude Sea Pool (FoBSP) was formed in the spring of 2011 to secure the Pool’s future under local management, and to keep it free for all to use. New York is pushing to become the first state to ban the devices, which so far remain unregulated and mostly unstudied. With cutesy colors, fruity flavors, clever designs and other options, e-cigarettes may hold too much appeal for young people, critics warn, offering an easy gateway to nicotine addiction.

But those criticisms clash with equally strong arguments for the value of e-cigarettes. The devices, which are tobacco-free, may be a safer alternative to cigarettes, say advocates, who point to testimonials from thousands of smokers who say they have used e-cigarettes to help them quit.

As the U.S. Food and Drug Administration struggles to gain regulatory control, and as safety studies remain works in progress, the debate continues.

“There really are a lot of unknowns with respect to health,” said Prue Talbot, a toxicologist at the University California, Riverside. “I don’t know of any studies in the literature which are peer-reviewed. Almost all of the studies have been paid for by the e-cigarette companies.

“E-cigarettes are often sold as safe, which is probably not true,” Talbot added. “They may not be as dangerous as real cigarettes, but on the other hand, they could be. We just don’t know.”

Electronic cigarettes typically use a rechargeable battery-operated heating element to vaporize the nicotine in a replaceable cartridge. Nicotine is usually dissolved in propylene glycol, a clear and colorless liquid that is commonly found in inhalers, cough medicines and other products.

Some e-cigarettes are made to look like real cigarettes, cigars or pipes. Others look like pens or USB memory devices. There is no tobacco involved, and no smoke either. Instead, users do what’s called “vaping.” As they inhale, they take in nicotine-filled vapor.

By isolating nicotine, e-cigarettes should carry far fewer chemical risks than regular cigarettes, said Michael Siegel, a tobacco researcher at Boston University. Tobacco contains about 5,000 known chemicals, he said, with as many as 100,000 more that haven’t yet been identified. E-cigarettes eliminate many of those ingredients.

Siegel and a colleague reviewed 16 studies that analyzed the contents of electronic cigarettes. In a paper just published in the Journal of Public Health Policy, they reported that levels of certain harmful chemicals were on par with levels found in nicotine patches and hundreds of times lower than what’s found in cigarettes.

The researchers also found evidence that vaping reduces cravings among smokers, not just for nicotine but also for the need to hold something in their hands and put something in their mouths — making the devices more appealing to them than patches or gum.

As a cigarette-quitting strategy, Siegel compared e-cigarettes to heroin needle exchange programs. It’s not that the devices are good for anyone, he said. They are just better than what they’re meant to replace.

“The relevant question is not, ‘Are these things safe?’” he said. “But are these things much safer than real cigarettes, and do they help people quit smoking? The answer to both of those questions we know is yes.”

“What New York is doing is equivalent to outlawing lifeboats on a sinking ship because they haven’t been FDA approved,” he added. “It’s a really crazy approach to public health.”

For other experts, the list of unknowns is still too large for them to consider e-cigarettes worth recommending. Some users, Talbot said, have reported problems with their lungs and throats that have forced them to stop using the devices.

And even though industry-funded studies have deemed the devices to be safe, an FDA report found levels of carcinogens and toxic contaminants that they determined to be were worthy of concern. Without regulation, Talobt added, cartridges may contain undisclosed chemicals that could end up being more toxic than tobacco smoke.

Quality control is also lacking. In a recent study, Talbot evaluated six brands of e-cigarettes acquired over the Internet. None of the devices were labeled clearly with nicotine levels, expiration dates or other information, she reported in December in the journal Tobacco Control.

Most cartridges leaked onto her hands, the study found, and all were defective in some way. Talbot also found unsubstantiated health claims on many of the company websites and print materials. One says they put vitamins in their e-cigarettes.

Other experts worry about the appeal of e-cigarettes to children. The devices are easy to buy online or in mall kiosks. They come in flavors ranging from chocolate to bubble gum. You can buy them in pink, gold or blue.

“Once a youth has decided to try an e-cigarette, there is nothing that protects him from getting addicted to nicotine by puffing this product,” wrote Jonathan Winickoff, a pediatrician at the MassGeneral Hospital for Children, in a letter to the FDA. “Nicotine itself is not safe for children. Nicotine addiction is one of the hardest addictions to break.”

New York’s move is a reaction to what can’t yet happen on the national level. According to a series of recent court decisions, e-cigarettes cannot qualify as drug delivery products, said Jeff Ventura, a spokesman for the FDA. As a result, the agency cannot ban them or require more arduous testing.

But even though they are now considered tobacco products, they are not mentioned in the Tobacco Control Act, either. For now, then, they remain unapproved and unregulated.

All of us need emergency funds for unforeseen emergencies such as losing your job. In other words, a sudden unforeseen crisis.

An emergency fund is cash savings that you can access quickly and easily in emergency situations. The savings usually ranges from three months to a year’s worth of living expenses. So, if your living expenses are ,000 each month, your emergency fund might range from ,000 to ,000.

The primary purpose of an emergency fund is to carry you in periods of joblessness or crisis. It can also be used to cover unexpected expenses when you don’t have the cash to pay. For example I was recently the target of a frivolous legal action and needed an expert legal counsel quickly so I had to visit my emergency funds. Top New York attorneys don’t come cheap.

Your emergency fund should not be used to buy consumer goods or to take expensive vacations. Get your big screen TV another time. If you use your fund for non-emergencies, what will happen when a real emergency appears?

If you currently don’t have an emergency fund or find it difficult to save money the key is to start small. Don’t beat yourself up for not having enough saved just start small.

First, if you haven’t done so go to your local bank and open up a new savings account, if you currently don’t have one, and begin to save with this first until a better strategy comes along.

Second, next step is to get into the habit of making regular deposits into this account. Whether it is weekly, bi-weekly or monthly, create a schedule and stick to it. Once you make saving automatic you won’t even have to think about it.

If you feel it is difficult to begin saving simply start with a small amount. Maybe you begin with or a week initially. If you think you don’t have it then cut back on something frivolous such as instead of 2 lattes a day one or none should do fine. While this won’t amount add up all that quickly the important thing is to start putting something away and to make it a habit. After a few weeks you won’t even notice that few dollars missing and you will probably drop five pounds from less milk and cream from your previous latte consumption.

Now that the initial shock of new found discipline has worn off you can bump it up to , , or even more after a month or so. You will begin to get used to that money not being there and can slightly up it again.

Third, always use automatic savings strategies so you don’t have to think about saving. It is already done for you. Set it up with your employer, even if you are self-employed, to go from your check or checking account to your savings account.

It isn’t difficult. The technology makes it very easy to set up an automatic savings plan. If you currently have direct deposit through your employer you will find the easiest way to establish this is to have part of your paycheck directly deposited into your savings account as well. It doesn’t matter the amount, simply having this happen automatically will make certain money is saved every time you are paid.

If you don’t have direct deposit, try another approach. Your bank can link checking and saving accounts together and establish automated transfers between accounts at a regular interval that you select. So if you cash your paycheck twice a month you could establish an automatic transfer of a set amount of money from checking to savings to correspond with this deposit.

You need a cash cushion not a credit card. A credit card for emergencies is a prescription for disaster. Use your credit card for short-term immediate emergencies such as paying the tow truck operator because your car broke down.

Only use emergency funds for real emergencies. Their purposes are to keep you healthy, safe, and ready for the unknown.

The fund must be liquid. You can’t depend on selling your Rolex as a short term strategy.

How much should you save? Depends on your needs. Change twice yearly jus to be sure you are keeping up.

The funds when needed should only be used for monthly essential and monthly obligations.

Be realistic. Are you in a volatile occupation? If so maybe you need a year’s worth of savings.

You should add a 10-15% addition on top of your monthly expenses just in case you have to hunt for a job.

Count on non-retirement accounts.

Don’t count on garage sales.

If you are working have an auto deduction set up to go directly to your savings or investment account from your check. This is my favorite strategy.

Keep some cash at home. Why? Natural disasters may temporarily prevent access to ATM’s.

He is holding it as payment since your online dating partner’s belongings were stolen and their whole family was wiped out in a single engine plane which crashed on the runway as they were on their way to the bank to deposit your partner’s inheritance check. Get the idea?

5. Money Time

You’ve kept your wits about you for the most part but now the gloves are off. They want currency and they want it right now. The communiqu?get more desperate and are now coming faster than the hard luck stories. In fact they start giving you specific instructions about transferring money.

You are not online to be anyone’s personal atm machine. If you feel the need to continue the communication let them know in no uncertain terms you will not provide money for anything. If they are a scammer that will probably end the “romance” right there. If they persist end all communication and if possible contact the proper authorities.

There are many people who are genuine and really do want to meet you online; for that reason do not be afraid to give some of the online dating services a chance. But we live in a world where many others driven solely by greed are out to commit cyber pick pocketing. Just remember the five tips listed above, keep your emotions in check and your instincts on high alert.

Well, once you’ve come to the realization that private investment capital is the way to go, your next job is to find the investors! This is easier said than done. Some of you may have better luck than others. Entrepreneurs with well developed social networks for example may find this to be an easy step. Others may turn to investor networking web sites like BreadStreet.com or purchase investor leads databases from lead brokers like SalesGenie.com for example.

Once you have identified your investor prospects, one of the first things you want to do before you approach the investors, is look at your offering from the investors point of view. The primary concern of all investors is always the same–. It is absolutely critical that you can show your potential investors that not only will they not LOSE their money; they will MAKE more of it. Take a good hard look at your offering. YOU must be convinced that your investor won’t lose his money and will definitely make great returns investing with you. If you are not convinced of this, then you will not be able to convince anyone else. If you aren’t convinced they wont lose their money, then what you are asking for is a grant, and those are available. A grant is nothing to be ashamed of and may be exactly what you need. But if you are positive that your company, film, or idea is going to be massively profitable, then read on.

I come to this knowledge from years of experience raising funds via the private sector. I have raised money for multiple feature films with private placement memorandums, funds for natural gas drilling rigs in a general partnership, and I am in the process of raising angel investment capital for two feature films and one start-up company. Note: I said in process. It is a process. There is a pattern to getting an investor to work with you and give you his money, especially when most of the sales process is handled over the phone.

The first things you need to establish with your potential investor are interest, liquidity, and control. Let’s cover interest first. Is he even mildly interested in what you are offering? I find that when I first approach an investor, I have only a few minutes to get that interest. You must cover his primary concerns immediately: safety and returns. At the top of what is called your pitch, you will introduce yourself, your investment vehicle, and immediately explain how it’s going to make a lot of money for your investor. I know you are in love with what you are offering, and when you find the right investor they will want to talk about it as much as you do. But at the top of the pitch, if you haven’t made it clear that his money is safe with you and will grow, and that he will see it again and then some, he has no reason to stay on the call. If he cuts you down right off the bat, I suggest you counter this with why your investment is so great and how he will make money. It’s called overcoming objections. So even if he says no, give him some reasons to say yes. If you try that a few times and he is still saying no, then let him go and move on. Don’t waste your energy. But you will be surprised how many times someone tells you they aren’t interested and after you have made even the slightest effort to convince them that they should be interested, you’ll find they are. One of the magic keys here is when you defend your investment and explain to them why they should be interested; you have exhibited confidence. Your confidence gives the investor confidence.

Once you have the investor’s interest you must If the person on the other line says, “I ain’t got a pot to piss in,” I suggest you wish them all the best and let them go. If you are working with qualified leads this shouldn’t be a problem. Nonetheless, it is important that you qualify the investor for liquidity. Say something like, “After you’ve looked this over and gotten all the paperwork and done your research and let’s say you fall in love with what we are doing, can you be liquid for the amount we are asking for in the required amount of time?” If he has to sell a house to get liquid to invest with you; that’s not so great. Ask a few more to see where the money might come from. But if he doesn’t have it, it doesn’t matter how much he loves your investment, it’s time to move on to the next investor. But if he is liquid, fantastic, let’s move the sales process forward.

At this point there are two main things you need to do. Give your investor something to contemplate and establish control. Control may sound a bit aggressive but it doesn’t need to be. The idea of control is to make sure this investor is willing to work with you. The main way to do this is to get more information from him. You will need to send him your literature via mail, fax, or email, so now is the time to get that personal information from him. Get his second number. If you two are truly going to be working together, then this shouldn’t be a problem. If he doesn’t want to give you any more information about himself, and says just send me something and I’ll think about it, he could be brushing you off. Make an appointment to speak again. The process of with an investor is when you find out how interested he really is. An interested investor should be willing to give you more of his information so you can send him your literature, and should be willing to set up the next conversation with you so you can further discuss the investment.

These next steps after you’ve established interest, liquidity, and control are where the sale comes in. After your investor has your literature, you will have to speak again to answer questions and establish the relationship. For large amounts of money, investors want to feel like they know the person they are giving it to. This is when a face to face meeting is incredibly helpful. This is the time when you should express your passion for what you are doing. Ask your investor if they have questions and let those turn into great discussions about your offering. Ask them what concerns they have and give them great answers for their concerns. A key here at this stage is repeat, repeat, repeat. There is nothing wrong with you saying the same great things about your investment vehicle over and over and over again, they will start to finally hear you. Now ask for the sale. ‘So, let’s move forward with this.’ ‘Can you write a check today?’ ‘I’d love to welcome you aboard.’ Find a way you feel comfortable assuming they have decided to do the investment and move the process along. If they object, cover the objection with a great answer and then ask for the sale again. Sometimes it takes a few objections before the sale happens.

All in all, sales is a process. You must begin this process with countless people before you will whittle it down to that with investment. It’s almost like dating, you may have to kiss a few frogs before you find your prince. Be prepared to talk to a lot of people and start this process with a lot of investors before you find the perfect match!

A study on production shows unhedged Australian producers as a clear winner with the gold price having risen 32% in the past month in Australian dollar terms as opposed to the American Greenback.

A December quarter survey by Sydney-based Resource Capital Research (RCR) painted a positive picture for gold production in the current global economic crisis with gold becoming increasingly attractive relative to low yield cash and bonds.

The report forecast that gold will trade in a range of $ US750-$ US850/ounce in the next few months but said a “breakout” was possible in the first quarter of 2009 should the $ US weaken in that period.

Established gold producers have suffered significant declines in their share price in the past three months despite improved fundamentals and while Australian producers have experienced a 32% rise in $ A terms, Canada in the same period, in $ C denominated terms, had a rise of only 5% while for South Africans the gold price in Rand terms was down 4%.

The RCR” study covers 20 global gold exploration and development companies operating in Australia, Canada, the United States and also based in the United Kingdom.

“The key factor for gold in recent months is not that it has not appreciated significantly, but that it has essentially held its value in a period of a strong US dollar, decreasing inflationary expectations, collapsing oil and commodity prices and aggressive hedge fund selling,” RCR said.

Recently released data for the third quarter of 2008 show investment demand for gold rose strongly during the period (up 18% on 3Q08), with record quarterly inflows into Exchange Traded Funds (ETF) of 150 tonnes, supplemented by further growth in coin and bar demand. Additionally, jewellery demand — mainly from India and China() — has remained strong, up 8% on previous year. (In Perth, media reports indicate the Perth Mint – a major gold buyer and seller in Australasia and South East Asia, has had to restrict sales because of a dramatic increase in demand for gold coins and jewellery).

“It is apparent that this strong increase in investment demand has been sufficient to absorb widespread disinvestment arising from hedge fund selling, margin calls and unwinding of long gold/short dollar contracts.

“We believe that shrinking cash and bond yields and the recent rise in the gold price will underpin further investment interest in gold as a safe haven and store of value.”

RCR considers the near-term outlook for the gold price remains closely tied to investment demand from safe haven buying, which has underpinned the price in recent months and is looking “increasingly strong.” If gold disinvestment tails off there is potential for further price gains.

“There is additional upside for a major gold price breakout should the US dollar lose its current safe haven currency status, through a further decline in the US economic outlook relative to other world economies in 2009.”  the report said.

ASX-listed mid tier and junior gold companies advancing Australian and international projects are:

Advancing a feasibility for its 1 million oz Brightstar project near Laverton in Western Australia (WA), with the aim of producing by 3Q09 with a with a low risk, low capex approach and 30,000 oz per annum, ramping to 50,000 oz pa within two years.

Has reached a critical stage of development at its advanced 2 M oz Southern Ashanti gold project in Ghana, with a capex $ US87 M required for construction. A BFS indicates production of 100,000 oz pa, with anticipated operating costs of $ US350-450/oz.

Expects an initial resource at the Caloma deposit on the Tomingley project in New South Wales this quarter and has a blueprint to produce 1 M oz pa by mid 2010.

A pre-feasibility study on the 100% owned Cerro Negro gold project in Argentina indicates potential for low-cost production by 2010. Cash costs were projected at $ US198/oz, with average production over six years at 220,000 oz pa. The project is continuing to intercept new high grade zones (>10g/t Au) and expand resources.

Production has reached the 1 Mtpa nameplate processing rate at its new Trident mine in WA, with strong recoveries (96.7%). Target production is between 160,000-190,000 oz pa. Current resource is 1.45 M oz with exploration upside to 4 M oz on a 6 km of prospective strike.

Has returned to full production at the high grade (9.8 g/t) Beaconsfield mine in Tasmania. The production rate of +80,000 oz pa is targeted, with remote mining methods now well established. The resource is defined to 1,290m with potential for depth extensions to 2,000m to add six more years.

Is targeting production early in 2010 to be a >100,000 oz pa producer from its Edna May project in WA’s eastern wheatbelt. CAH is confident of securing project financing.

It controls the historic Charters Towers goldfield in Queensland. Current resource is 10 M oz grading 14 g/t, and has set target production of 310,000 oz pa by late 2012. The company recently raised $ A35 M ($ US22.9 M).

Production is moving to full scale mining on the high grade Reward mine in the Hill End goldfield in NSW. The Reward shaft was completed November and has near-term production potential for 25,000-50,000 oz pa. The long-term resource target for the field is 5 M oz.

RCR forecasts strong production growth with output of 74,000 oz projected for 2008 and 180,000 oz by 2011, despite lowering of resource grades. The “big news” is the exciting Chokdee gold find 20 km north of the company’s Chatree gold mine in Thailand, where there is a current 3.2 M oz resource.

Plans to be in production at its Leonora gold project in WA by late 2009. A 1 Mtpa milling operation is aiming to produce about 100,000 oz pa gold. The key is projected low capex and opex through initial treatment of shallow soft oxide ore.

The company purchased 60% of the 70-80,000 oz pa Pajingo gold operation in north Queensland and is undertaking resource drilling on this mature operation to extend Pajingo’s current five years life.

Is undertaking advanced exploration on the Challenger gold project in NSW and is continuing exploration on the big Malaumanda copper-gold project in Papua New Guinea.

If a firm has a very low turnover rate and assumes a 4% turnover, the company (for most practical purposes) will be unfunded at some time. Estimates should be conservative.

The plethora of bank and corporate bailouts, stimulus plans and interest-rate cuts that the U.S. government has produced over the last three months can only lead to one outcome: The U.S. dollar has to decline.

During the crisis so far, the dollar in general, and U.S. Treasury bonds in particular, have been regarded as a “safe haven,” making the dollar strong and pushing long-term U.S. Treasury rates downward. In the New Year, however, this is likely to change – the weight of the added supply of dollars in circulation will be too great for the greenback to shrug off.

Back in November 2007, when I wrote about the U.S. dollar becoming the “Bernanke peso,” I suggested that the dollar – then trading at .50 to the euro – would get weaker. Alas, I was wrong: It is currently trading at .29 to the euro, although it did reach .60 in May. However, I recommended buying not euros, but yen. The chaos of 2008 has reversed the decline in the dollar against the euro, but not against the yen, which has reached Yen 92.8 = compared to a rate of Yen 114.8 = when I wrote the piece. A gain of 24% against the dollar is not bad, and indeed I defy you to find a stock market that has done as well over that period.

The fundamentals tending to weaken the dollar remain. The U.S. trade deficit was .2 billion in October, which annualizes to 0.3 billion – down but a little from the 2006 peak of 8 billion. Although the recession and recent sharp decline in the value of U.S. oil imports will reduce the U.S. trade deficit further – perhaps to 0 billion annually – there is still no reason why foreigners should continue to so highly rate the currency of a country that is running a 0 billion balance-of-payments deficit, and a trillion budget deficit.

After a pause during the summer, the U.S. money supply has begun rising again rapidly. The excess money has flowed into Treasury bonds, sending the yield on the 10-year bond down to a recent 2.71%. The distortion in the market can be shown by the yield on the 10-year Treasury Inflated Protected Securities (TIPS), which was 2.44%; that combination of prices said that investors expect U.S. inflation to average a mere 0.27% annually over the next 10 years.

Clearly that’s nonsense; the explanation is that yields on long-term Treasury bonds have been driven far below their economically appropriate level. In other words, U.S. Treasury bonds are currently benefiting from a bubble, and like the bubbles that we’ve seen in Japanese stocks, real estate, U.S. tech stocks, the American housing market and global commodities, this bubble, too, will ultimately burst.

Net foreign purchases of long-term U.S. securities declined to 3 billion in the 12 months to September 2008, from .03 trillion in the previous year. Of those purchases, Treasury bonds and notes represented 5 billion, up from 2 billion in the previous year, while purchased corporate bonds shrank from 7 billion to 8 billion. Thus, the “flight to quality” has so far been enormously helpful in enabling the U.S. Treasury to finance its growing budget deficit; in October and November it will doubtless have been even more so.

Once the inflow into U.S. Treasuries slows, or the huge volume of Treasuries issued simply overwhelms it, the dollar will weaken and Treasury yields will rise. At that point, there is likely to be a stampede for the exits from the Treasury bond market, which will be self-reinforcing. As a wise investor, you could prepare for this stampede in four ways:

First, you could have a modest holding of the Rydex Juno Fund (RYJCX), the price of which is inversely linked to T-bond prices (the fund shorts Treasury bond futures.). The fund has had a poor record since its inception in 2001, and it probably makes little sense to put too much money in it. However, given the scenario we’ve sketched out here, the fund will do a lot better in 2009.

Second, you should have bond, cash and stock holdings in foreign currencies, particularly the euro and the yen (but not British pounds sterling; with a housing bubble and a bloated financial sector, Britain has many of the same problems as the United States). Aside from foreign-currency-denominated stocks and bonds, you may want to consider a foreign-currency-deposit account through EverBank, which offers foreign-currency certificates of deposit (CDs), albeit at low interest rates, at present – only 1% on a 12-month Euro CD for example. Third, you should hold some gold, which is likely to profit from a dollar collapse – for example through the SPDR Gold Trust fund (GLD), which has ample liquidity, with .6 billion outstanding, and which tracks the gold price directly.

Fourth, you may make a modest (no more than 1% to 2% of your portfolio) speculation in currency options, which are traded on the Philadelphia Stock Exchange. Since the yen has already enjoyed a considerable run against the dollar, the best speculation might be to purchase out-of-the-money euro call options, which will rise in price once the dollar starts falling against the euro. Personally, I prefer to buy the longest possible options available, to give the market time to move in my direction. So, I would go for the September 140s (PHLX: XDEIH), giving nine months to maturity at a strike price about 8% out of the money (the euro being currently at .29). Currently these are trading at .55 offered, so you would have to pay 5 for each 10,000 euros on which you purchased an option. Your break-even would thus be .4450. If the euro is trading above that level next September, you would gain, so if it matched its May peak of .60, you would make ,000 per contract. If it was below .40, you would lose your investment of 5 per contract.

Although corruption involves a giver and recipient, it is always the taker who is reported in the media. In many instances bribes are offered in order to secure contracts, secure official favour or to induce officials in order to influence the out come of a government decision. In other instances people become corrupt because of the existence of favouring conditions as can be seen in most western countries with their banking secrecy laws. 

Why does the media in the West ignore the role of western institutions in corrupt deals? The media in the west tend to ignore the role of western institutions for many reasons. They would rather show the poverty level in Africa but refuse to show the role play by western institutions for fear of loosing revenue through adverts. Most media outlets survive through advertisements from mega businesses and the multinational corporations so for fear of loosing revenues the media turn a blind eye to their activities such bribing politicians, public officials and polluting the environment. Again the editors, programme directors and the other big wigs in the media are thelselves shareholders in the companies in question so why would they want to jeopardise the source of their own wealth? 

The enthusiasm with which CNN, BBC, ABC, CBS, ITN, SKYNEWS, television producers portray Africa as poor, backward, least developed and corrupt is not displayed when they report on the role play by Western institutions in perpetuating the aforementioned. They fail to tell the world that the looted funds that make Africans poor are sitting in Europe, America, Australia, New Zealand and other offshore Islands controlled by the West. They fail to tell the world that Africa would be a different place if all the stolen monies are returned from Switzerland, Britain, America, France, Luxembourg, Austria and Liechtenstein. After years of foot draggings Swiss authorities decided to repatriate monies stolen by the Abacha regime. So I asked myself where was the western media when Swiss and British Banks were receiving the looted funds? The fact still remains that until recently and with the exception of the BBC none of the western media establishment had permanent reporters based in Africa with reason only best known to themselves.

Corruption is rife in Africa because banking institutions in Europe especially Switzerland, France, Jersey Island, Britain, Luxembourg, Liechtenstein, Austria and US among others accept money from African leaders without questioning its source. According to the UN and the AU around 8 billion is stolen from the continent annually by political leaders, multinational corporations, the business elite and civil servants with complicity of banking and property industries in Europe and North America. 

Even though western banks act as safe havens for looted funds, very little attention is received from the western media to expose them. No effort has been made by the political elite in Europe and America to force the banks to return these stolen monies because they are often the shareholders and beneficiaries of profits made by these banks. They have no agenda to combact corruption as that would mean no fat dividends for them and no cheap credits for their citizens. 

Within five years of his reign (1993-98) Sani Abacha of Nigeria according to official sources was able to stash four billion dollars and between 12 and 16 billion dollars according to unofficial sources. After his death in 1998, investigators in Nigeria, Europe and America stumbled on over 130 bank accounts in Australia, New Zealand, London, New York, France and Switzerland among other countries where some of the money stolen was kept. 

According to France24, a French police investigation has established that Bongo and his family own at least 33 luxury properties in France, including a villa located at Rue de la Baume, near the Elysée Palace, in Paris bought in 2007 for 18.8 million Euros. The French President Nicolas Sarkozy was spotted greeting Bongo in this villa bought with funds looted from Gabon. Other investigations have uncovered that he and his family have at least 59 properties, several bonds and stocks in France alone. 

French Foreign Minister Bernard Kouchner was embarrassed when it was revealed that Bongo’s government paid his consultancy firm a staggering 2.64 million Euros for advice on health policy drawn up by Kouchner before he took office.  Kouchner is not the only person in France, Europe and America to have benfited from the shady and corrupt dealing of Africa’s political and business establishments. It has recently come to light that Omar Bongo secretly financed Jacques Chirac and Francois Mitterand election campaigns using money he had stolen from his country.The question is who assisted him to steal and hide his ill-gotten wealth in France I mean the 70 banks accounts stashed with hundreds of millions of euros and the 33 luxury mansions that he bought? Is it not those he helped to become presidents, prime ministers and foreign ministers? The fact is that Bongo was able to steal, mismanage and poorly run his country because of the support he received from those he helped win elections in France.

Bongo contributed to the election campaigns of François Mitterrand and Jacques Chirac; Nicolas Sarkozy’s first act as president-elect was to call the Gabonese president and thank him for his advice. On February 26, 2009 a French court had Omar Bongo’s nine bank accounts containing several millions of Euros frozen. In confirming the court’s decision, lawyer Jean-Philippe Le Bail said, “This concerns Crédit Lyonnais, in which the president of Gabon has two current accounts, two savings accounts and a share account, and BNP, in which he has two checking accounts, a savings account and a share account”. These are the banks whose shady deals with the political and business elite impoverish African countries but which for profits sake the media refuse to tell the world about. The banks know these corrupt leaders have stolen the money yet they pretend not to know until there is a scandal before they begin to act as if they are responsible institutions. How and why Bongo was able to open so many bank accounts in France is only known to the banks and the political establishment in France but it is an undisputable fact that the media in France did notdo enougth to expose the rot in involving Bongo and the institutions in that country. 

Most foreign banks have been implicated for receiving billions of dollars of looted funds from the late Mobutu of Zaire; Lansana Conte of Guinea; Eyadema of Togo; and a number of tyrants such as Omar Bongo of Gabon; Obiang Nguema of Equatorial Guinea; Dos Santos of Angola; Denis Sassou Nguesso of Congo; Paul Biya of Cameroon; Arap Moi of Kenya; Jerry Rawlings of Ghana; Ibrahim Babadjinda of Nigeria and a number of sitting and ex-presidents in Africa yet western media is silent about where the funds are being kept.

A British foreign office spokeswoman said later that it too had shut its embassy because of “security concerns”. Hakim al-Masmari, the editor-in-chief of the Yemen Post newspaper, told AFP news agency that the closure can only mean “that they believe al-Qaeda threat is very serious”. “If you look at the recent video tapes from al-Qaeda, they clearly mention they have no enemy in Yemen except the US interests in Yemen. They warned the Yemeni soldiers against helping the Americans in any such way,” al-Masmari said. “We really expect attacks on the US interests in the next month by al-Qaeda.” The US move came shortly after the British government announced plans to join the United States in funding an “anti-terrorist” force in Yemen. Government treasuries from the US to Germany and the UK have had a pretty grim time as well. The long rush to safety in State debt seems to have suddenly hit a brick wall as investors now worry about inflation and over issuance. The US Federal Reserve and European Central Bank seem to be printing cash on a monumental scale in order to help loosen the credit markets. When you add the Bank of England, all three are now propping up the ailing banks with public funds. So who is going to buy this rising tide of paper?

This brings us to the ‘safe haven’ of Cash. Another difficult decision, where to keep it? Suddenly those pillars of the western world, the major banks, do not look quite so sturdy and as the HBOS saga showed. Even other banks are very willing to believe in the instability of their peers. That is clear from their unwillingness to lend to each other. The value of cash can now be seen from the fact that the banks are willing to pay considerably over base rates to acquire it. There is one primary reason, above all others, that causes a person to pay over the odds for an asset. Scarcity.

Much of the world’s worth is tied up in non-cash assets of one form or another. Bonds, Property, Equities and so on. Much of it is controlled by Insurance Companies, Pension Funds, Hedge Funds etc. And most of that is currently falling in value. And a lot of it is also quite difficult to, quickly, turn into cash at rates remotely resembling the ‘book value’.

The recent decimation of capital worth across the planet has been quite amazing. Wall Street stalwart, Bear Stearns, deftly turned bn of savings into virtually zero in two weeks. Peloton and Carlyle (just a few of many many Hedge Funds) wiped out £13 billion of other peoples money. An astounding sum of money. And these are the ones we have heard about.

Unfortunately the growth of the world economies is often tied up in how well the wealthy are doing. A sad indictment of the capitalist system. And at the moment, unless they are sitting on a commodity asset, they are doing rather badly.

So banks are short of the one thing that they always need to meet various regulatory hurdles, cash.

The problem is that the various central banks (apart from the Bank of England) have now done virtually everything they can to free up the wheels. There is little left in the armoury. It would almost seem that the never ending negative trade balances of the west have finally drained the well.

So where do you put your money? I have heard that the Private Swiss banks have started to come back into popularity. Companies and individuals do not necessarily want secrecy but they do want to put their money in an institution that is not tainted by the Mortgage or Derivatives markets.

Just to confirm, that’s not from a tax avoidance point of view, but from a desire to have funds somewhere where it is not at risk from systematic financial failure. The UK Government had difficulty propping up Northern Rock. What if a bigger unit got into trouble? The insurance on assets only goes up to some £40-50k. Wealthier depositors are obviously deciding that they need greater security than that.

Spread bets carry a high level of risk to your money and may not suit all forms of investor. You can lose more than your initial investment so make sure you only speculate with capital that you can afford to lose. Likewise make sure you understand the risks involved and seek independent financial advice where necessary.

The California Gold rush is a well documented example of how far back gold has been popular. In fact, we can go back thousands of years to trace the investment lineage of gold. Gold has historically and will continue to be a solid investment! Think about this, gold is an item you can hold in your hand, that alone is a main reason why it is so valuable. It is an item you can hold, wear around your neck or store in a safe. It’s not an abstract number in a computer bank that rises or lowers by market movers who have no clue. It’s not spat out by a magic money tree in the basement the Federal Reserve. It is produced by mother earth and all her wonderful resources. Gold, to this day has to be mined by gold miners and separated from the earth. Gold is virtually impossible to become worthless, along with silver it is what all paper and minted money is supposed to be backed by in all countries around the globe. Everywhere you can think of, world economies depend on the price of gold, and more importantly the economies need the value of it to be maintained in a positive manner.

The history of our economy has always been whenever derivative money such as the Dollar have shown times of volatility, causing stocks and bonds to go on a wild ride, that is when most seasoned and wise investors have turned to gold and precious metals as a place to not only invest but to protect their hard earned precious wealth. Way back when gold was first discovered, gold has always been the rock upon which all currency and wealth is built upon. Stocks, bonds, oil, pork bellies, orange juice futures and other commodities, can collapse any day, gold will never collapse. The original money known to mankind is, that’s right gold. You can wake up one morning, or return from work one day and in an instant The Dollar can become worthless on the FOREX, but gold will never lose any of its value. If the Dollar were to become worthless, then investors would be pushing up the value of gold, driving the price to historic levels, and investing much more of their money in it! That will be an all time Gold Rush, and your pockets will be lined with golden dollar signs.

Now, I do not want to get your hopes up, in fact the Dollar going to zero is not a realistic scenario. But now that we have your attention we are just exaggerating to make a point–a very realistic point that gold as an investment really has some true merit. Gold coins and gold bullion have been magnificent investments for a long period of time. We do not see this changing and the more troubled times that occur in the speculative stocks and bond markets, thanks to a few greedy people, the better gold coins and bullion become as investment vessels. Gold will always remain a smart investment choice, perhaps one of the few, safe outstanding plays for a college fund. If college is still greater than 15 years out, then a play on gold, may in fact be a safe haven for a few of those “golden” eggs. In other words get into gold when your child is born and just tuck it away for the first college day.

Now, let’s look at what may not be fun to review, but is probably a good time to discuss the facts, and that is a few hard economic realities. First things first, the value of gold and the other precious metals, always reflects global inflation. Inflation is caused by the increased circulation of derivative or fiat monies. Inflation, even if it were to slow down now (very, very unlikely), is a hard reality of modern economics; thus, the value of gold will continue to rise. This story begins during the height of the investment madness in 2000, just prior to the bear market. I had been managing an IRA account for “Bob” for around six years, with a better than average record of success. So I was surprised when Bob sheepishly called in July, 2000 to let me know he was transferring his IRA account, which had done particularly well during our latest Buy cycle going into the year 2000.

However, his tax preparer, a long time personal friend of Bob’s wife’s, was now also offering investment services, having recently received his Registered Representative’s license.

Fast forward to the end of September. It had become increasingly clear to me that the Bull market had run its course. So, in accordance with the Sell signal from our trend tracking methodology, we sold all of our mutual fund positions on October 13, 2000 and went 100% into money market. (See my article “How we eluded the Bear in 2000” at http://www.successful-investment.com/articles12.htm). From our safe haven we watched the market crash and burn, causing most other investors to sustain double digit losses eventually reaching as high as 50 – 60% of their assets.

In 2002 Bob unexpectedly stopped by my office. As it turned out, things had not gone well at all with his IRA investments. As most advisors would have done, his tax preparer/advisor had quickly moved all of Bob’s assets into a variety of “load funds.”

Of course, being newly licensed he was clueless (as were many licensed advisors) as to market behavior or analysis of any kind. The end result was that Bob’s portfolio lost in excess of 50% over the next 2 years. (Not to gloat, but my clients’ losses in the same period were non-existent.)

Unfortunately, the degree of loss Bob sustained was experienced by many investors who did not follow a disciplined and methodical approach.

What I find particularly distasteful is that Bob’s tax preparer misused his position of trust. He made financial decisions that he was not qualified to make, though his license implied that he did know enough to make them. So now we know what a piece of paper is worth.

This is no different than letting a newly graduated medical student with a fresh MD behind his name perform heart surgery. Or, hiring a new MBA grad to Chief Financial Officer of a Fortune 500 company. Yet the financial services industry allows someone to get a license (after a fairly short course) and to immediately start making incredibly important and far reaching financial decisions for anyone he or she can sell their service to.

This is a worrisome trend in this industry. A CPA friend confirmed that he has been approached many times by firms wanting him to offer investment services.

Why? It’s easy money! Accountants and tax professionals have a great business base. They are in a unique position of trust, because of the information their clients disclose to them. Whether they are employed by a company or they maintain an individual practice, there is probably no other person (other than your spouse) who knows as many intimate details of your financial life as your accountant/tax preparer.

To abuse this trust for personal gain—no matter how noble the motive may appear—is a total conflict of interest and a huge betrayal.

The bear market of 2000 has shown that investing must be a disciplined endeavor. Even most professionals have failed to recognize this. What busy accountant, in the middle of tax season, can put the necessary time and attention to a volatile investment market that may require action at a moment’s notice?

As for Bob, he’s still with his accountant, and in the same investments that brought his portfolio down. He’s hoping for a miracle recovery. As of this writing, the stock market is engaged in something of an upswing and Bob, I’m sure, is getting his hopes up that he will recover some of his losses. However, I shudder to think that this rally may come to an end and the bear market resumes. Where will Bob be then?

At 58 years old Bob is still playing Russian roulette with his retirement. He’s apparently unable to make a decision to move to someone who has the ability to make sense of market trends and the discipline to follow the signals they communicate. This is a decision that will have a profound affect on his financial future—and will determine whether his story has a happy or sad ending.

While most portfolio managers do not invest in their own mutual fund, they do in both hedge funds and spoke funds. Investors typically prefer this approach as they feel the portfolio manager will have his best interests at heart when managing the portfolio. A key distinction between mutual funds and hedge funds when compared with spoke funds is how the money is invested. In both mutual funds and hedge funds, investors monies are pooled together in a  lump sum. Why is this bad? The actions of a few investors can effect the performance of other investors.

Typically at the bottom of a stock market cycle, investors want portfolio managers to look for value and opportunity as the market recovers. However, this is not always the case. Behavioral finance has shown us that investors typically panic at the bottom of market cycles. Instead of looking for opportunity, portfolio managers are typically using any cash in the portfolio to pay out to investors leaving the fund. The investors who remain in the fund, don’t get the expected performance when markets begin to rise.

In a spoke fund, each investors account is separate, but instead linked together. When the portfolio manager of the spoke fund purchases a security, the same security is bought in all the accounts at the same time. When an investor leaves the spoke fund, only his account is liquidated, having no impact on other investors within the fund.

The spoke fund concept provides investors better transparency, avoids problems inherent with pooled money, and gives a portfolio manager a better opportunity to navigate volatile markets.

Investors who are looking to invest in either a mutual fund or hedge fund should give spoke funds a look.

But some people outside the US have been surprised to learn that their own banks are heavily involved in bank to bank loans involving US companies affected by the subprime mortgage business, and their citizens are waking up to what a global economy can mean in bad times as well as good.

In Europe, the tax havens of Monaco and Andorra are regarded as safe havens – or as safe as can be in today’s global economy – and both countries have seen an inward flow of funds over the last year, not only from other European countries but from the Middle East and the US too.

But now even the banks in Andorra are tightening up on who they lend money to, and cutting the amount they lend to property buyers looking for a mortgage.

Previously the banks were lending up to 80 per cent of a property’s value, but recently this has been cut to 70 per cent. In addition the previous ease of getting a mortgage with few checks for assets has been replaced with more documentation required.

‘The new tougher controls on credit being seen by the Andorra banks might impact the property market a little as we are in the middle of the ski season, and some people on ski holiday end up buying an apartment, many taking advantage of easy to get loans.’ commented one Andorra property company recently.

Reporting on last year’s property market, the company says 2007 looked gloomy for estate agents in Andorra for the year overall given poor sales for last January, February and March. But the second quarter proved to be dramatically better.

Rather than the ski apartment selling season being delayed, what saved the second quarter was high net worth individuals looking for residency and taking advantage of Andorra’s tax haven status that has reignited the property market.

Buyers from the UK in particular were out in force during April, May and June – and again in the autumn from October, with many spending twice as much as the average ski apartment buyer.

The property buyers tend to head for different areas of Andorra, with the ski apartment buyers tending to purchase in the key ski resorts of Soldeu and Arinsal.

Those looking for residency for tax reasons go more for the year round villages and towns which have a resident community.

Outside of the capital (la Vella) these tend to be La Massana and the upcoming village of Anyos, Ordino and Arinsal, although Arinsal’s nightlife during the ski season early December to late April tends to steer many newcomers to La Massana and Ordino.

It’s early days in the global slowdown of easy credit and fast loans, and while London and New York are the main players in the banking game, countries as small as Andorra will be trying to avoid any major impact on their domestic banking systems and real estate markets, although in the medium and long term that might prove just impossible to achieve.

Although adoption is a beautiful gift to give a child, it’s not always a beautiful gift for the families who are struggling to survive living with these children who suffer with Reactive Attachment Disorder (RAD), PTSD, or some other form of mental illness. There are far too many families who are in need of help, and there just isn’t enough help out there. Some of these families are being physically and emotionally abused. Some of them are slowly dying. While some of them feel as if they have no other choice but to reverse the adoption and send the child back into the foster care system. Yet, many of these families could survive a little easier if there was some kind of a SAFE PLACE to run to when they were in a crisis situation, when their child’s behavior was out of control, when they felt that they were too tired to go on or when someone in their family was at risk of being hurt or killed. A MArtingale collar only has a short section of choke chain, the majority of the collar though is typical nylon collar. This way you can get the benefits of a choke chain, without the risk of your dog choking itself, getting caught on something and choking, or wounding it’s neck.

The first thing you may want to think about will be how big the tent needs to be.
